New Best Indian Restaurant

January 14th, 2007

New buffet on Gerrard Street, Mahar (1410 Gerrard, north side) takes 1st prize. They even have two soups! Great salad bar. For the first time I had Kashmiri Tea, a pink sweet chai with pistachios floating in it:

technology

October 31st, 2006

“The technology we need most badly is the technology of community–the knowledge about how to cooperate to get things done. Our sense of community is in disrepair at least in part because the prosperity that flowed from cheap fossil fuel has allowed us all to become extremely individualized, even hyperindividualized, in ways that, as we only now begin to understand, represent a truly Faustian bargain. We Americans haven’t needed our neighbors for anything important, and hence neighborliness–local solidarity–has disappeared. Our problem now is that there is no way forward, at least if we’re serious about preventing the worst ecological nightmares, that doesn’t involve working together politically to make changes deep enough and rapid enough to matter. A carbon tax would be a very good place to start.”–Bill McKibbon

Jazz #2: Koller - Michaels

May 1st, 2006

Week two of Sunday afternoon jazz at Ten Feet Tall: a voice - bass duo, George Koller on Bass (who I had heard on an avant garde CD with David Baird) and Julie Michaels singing. George sang as well, or hummed. George played furiously, and the sound was full, and the singing light and beautiful–”Scarborough Fair” was a highlight.

Jazz #1: Brandi Disterhoff Trio

April 23rd, 2006

One of our local establishments, Ten Feet Tall, on the Danforth east of Greenwood, is now featuring Sunday afternoon jazz–yea!

The first day, today, we saw Brandi, Sly Juhas on drums, and Chris Gale on sax. We had already seen the trio at The Pilot a few weeks ago. A great band, apparently recording this year; can’t wait to get the CD. Chris is close enough to being out there while keeping a structured melodic flow going.

Ten Feet tall has Tank House on tap, good sweet potato frites, and very friendly staff.

Another Great Beer

April 23rd, 2006

I found this Ottawa brewer’s IPA at the LCBO megastore on Queen’s Quay in T.O. Amazing fresh and spicy beer.

Canoeing up to the ice, we heard what sounded like thousands of clinking glasses.
